TESOL PreK-12 Minor Sophomore Advising

SOPHOMORES WHO ARE DECLARING THE TESOL MINOR -


On MyMadison there are steps describing the declaration of a minor process.

FIRST, contact and schedule to meet with a TESOL advisor (either Dr. Katya Koubek [koubekex@jmu.edu] or Dr. Stephanie Wasta [wastasa@jmu.edu]) in order to determine if this is an appropriate minor for you and to create an appropriate schedule.

SECOND, finish the declaration process electronically on MyMadison.

THIRD, complete the EFEX Equipment Loan Agreement and bring to the meeting with your advisor when declaring.

FOURTH, apply to Teacher Education Spring of your Sophomore year and have a GPA of at least 2.5 or higher and

Earn a "C" or better in the following classes:

  • WRTC 103, or equivalent 
  • MATH designated course
  • PSYC 160, PSYC 614, or equivalent 
  • EDUC 200 (formerly EDUC 300), or equivalent


FIFTH, you must take TESL 300 (formerly 426) with TESL 382 Fall or Spring semester in order to proceed with the minor in a timely manner.

  • TESL 300 (426) and TESL 382 are prerequisites for TESL 428 and TESL 470.


Other TESOL courses to complete this year:


  • EDUC 310 (fall or spring) 
  • EDUC 370 (spring only)

Further clarification of the SAT / ACT Waiver option: 

 

You must complete the following Assessment Requirement:

  • VCLA Reading and Writing (composite score of 470), AND 
    • Praxis Core Math (score of 150) or one of the following substitute tests:
      • ACT Math score of 22 + ACT Composite score of 24
      • SAT Math score of 560 (if taken on or after 3/1/16) or SAT Math score of 530 (if taken between 4/1/95
