TESOL Post-Bacc MAT

AS OF JUNE 2021-22 NOT TAKING NEW STUDENTS


First Semester:


Take VCLA and apply for admission into Teacher Education (ESC), if pre-requisite courses are completed.

Complete all prerequisite courses listed in the Acceptance letter.



Fall Semester Recommended TESOL Course Sequence:

  • TESL 626 (3 credits) and TESL 551 (1 credit)
  • TESL 525 (3 credits)
  • LED 566 (3 credits) and TESL 553 (1 credit) (if listed as a prerequisite on your Acceptance letter)

Second Semester:


Apply for admission into Teacher Education Program (ESC), if ineligible to apply first semester.

Apply for student teaching. See Teacher Education website: www.jmu.edu/coe/esc.


Spring Semester Recommended TESOL Course Sequence:

  • LTLE 695 (3 credits) and start research project process. 

By end of the semester, have a 3-member committee and set up proposal defense with the chairperson of the committee.

  • TESL 615 (3 credits) and 
  • TESL 550 (3 credits)


Summer Semester Recommended TESOL Course Sequence:

  • EXED 612 (3 credits)
  • EDUC 540 (3 credits)

Third Semester: 


Have proposal defense and IRB review early in the semester, if not before the semester begins. You will conduct your research study this semester.

Attend the EFEX Induction Ceremony, a requirement for all students in an EFEX licensure program.  Recognition given to students who are fully admitted to Teacher Education.

  • EXED 680 (1 credit) (research project)
  • TESL 682 (1 credit)
  • TESL 628 (3 credits)
  • LED 635 (3 credits) and TESL 552 (1 credit)

Fourth Semester:


Recommended TESOL Course Sequence:

  • TESL 681 (6 credits) (Student Teaching)
  • EXED 683 (1 credit) (finish research project)


Take the PRAXIS ESOL 5362 exam AFTER you have completed your TESOL coursework - likely early in your student teaching term.

You will need to have a passing score to submit your paperwork for TESOL licensure.
