EXED Minor FAQs

I just declared the EXED Non-Teaching minor. Is it possible for me to take the pre-req class (EXED 200) and a survey class at the same time?

If I declared the minor when a course was required (EXED 440 etc) and it is no longer required how will the Registrar know I completed the minor if I do not take that course?

Can I graduate with an uncompleted minor as I will be unable to complete my minor course requirements before I graduate?

When should I declare the minor?

What grade must I earn to pass a course?

When must all courses be completed to pass the minor and graduate on time?

What happens if we do not follow the Program Plan I submitted when I declared the minor?

Why do I have to complete a "Student Information Sheet" and a "Program Plan" before my pending Declaration is approved?

When I complete my Application for a Bachelor's Degree do I need the minor advisor's signature and the department head signature on the app?

I graduated high school with my Associate's Degree, so my goal is to graduate in two years. Is this doable?

I have seen the minor listed as SPED Non-Teaching and also as EXED Non-Teaching. Which is correct?

If I take both EXED 416 and EXED 375 can I get credit for both?

EXED 309 - how is the class graded? Is it only mentoring other students or is there a lecture that goes along with this class?

I cannot remember what courses I have taken and what courses I still need to take.

Can I substitute EXED 303 for EXED 440?

If I took EXED 416, 417 & 418 would they count as my 3 elective courses?

What year would you recommend that I start taking the minor courses?

Are EXED 416, 417, 418 "waiver courses"? I plan to take these as well to earn the autism certificate but realize that 27 credits is unrealistic what courses do I cut out since we only need 18 credits?

I completed EXED 200 last semester and it counted towards my CSD major. After declaring the EXED NT minor, will EXED 200 only count towards my minor requirements or will it still also count towards my CSD major?

What about substitution/waiver courses?

Can I take another EXED Minor course concurrently while take EXED 200, the prerequisite for all other courses in this minor?

You will need to ask the survey class instructor if he/she will allow you to take the survey class concurrently with EXED 200. In this situation only the course instructor can approve an override into the survey course.

If I declared the minor when a course was required (EXED 440 etc) and it is no longer required how will the Registrar know I completed the minor if I do not take that course?

When you complete your Application for a Bachelor's Degree you will also need to complete an "Request to Change Academic Plan (Catalog) Requirement Year. The EFEX Department will have these blank forms.

Can I graduate with an uncompleted minor as I will be unable to complete my minor course requirements before I graduate?

You can drop the minor and can graduate as long as you meet your major and general ed requirements and the required 120 hours needed to graduate.

When should I declare the minor?

The minor must be declared no later than the end of the first semester of a student's Junior year

What grade must I earn to pass a course?

Students must earn a "C" or better in courses for credits to count towards the minor (grades of "C-" and below do not count).

When must all courses be completed to pass the minor and graduate on time?

All courses MUST be completed by the end of the Spring Semester of the Senior year to be able to graduate on time with the minor.

What happens if we do not follow the Program Plan I submitted when I declared the minor?

There may be instances where a course is not offered that particular semester or the courses may be full. If that happens just take another minor course. The courses do not have to be taken in any particular order as long as EXED 200 is taken first. The only variance on this is the Autism Series which do have to be taken in consecutive order.

Why do I have to complete a "Student Information Sheet" and a "Program Plan" before my pending Declaration is approved?

The "Student Information Sheet" gives the Department the information they need to add you to their EXED Non-Teaching spreadsheet and the "Program Plan" helps when planning and scheduling courses.

When I complete my Application for a Bachelor's Degree do I need the minor advisor's signature and the department head signature on the app?

Yes, you must have the signature of both on the grad app.

I graduated high school with my Associate's Degree, so my goal is to graduate in two years. Is this doable?

If you are able to get in the courses, then yes. It sounds like a dual enrollment in high school which led to the Associate's Degree which satisfies all of the GenEd requirements and you would just have the CSD major and EXED Non-Teaching minor courses to complete.

I have seen the minor listed as SPED Non-Teaching and also as EXED Non-Teaching. Which is correct?

The steps to change the name of a minor is time-consuming. Originally the department was the SPED department, hence the minor name. The minor name was changed several years ago to EXED Non-Teaching but we are still waiting for myMadison to have it listed as such.

If I take both EXED 416 and EXED 375 can I get credit for both?

If you take EXED 375 you cannot take EXED 416 because they cover a lot of the same content.

EXED 309 - how is the class graded? Is it only mentoring other students or is there a lecture that goes along with this class?

The main activity is that you will assume responsibility for planning a socially valid and developmentally appropriate activity for the group. You will plan for a minimum of two hours of activity (roughly 9:30-11:30 am) and arrange for all materials and content of the experience. You do not need to deliver the content, but you need to see to the delivery. In addition, there will be a weekly prompt for online discussion and reflection. [NOTE: formerly called EXED 401].

I cannot remember what courses I have taken and what courses I still need to take.

Your unofficial transcript is the accurate reference for you to see what courses you have completed in the minor or you can download the "Student Course Tracking Sheet" to track your own progress through the minor.

Can I substitute EXED 303 for EXED 440?

Yes.

If I took EXED 416, 417 & 418 would they count as my 3 elective courses?

You can only count EXED 417 and 418 as your elective courses. EXED 416 could count as one of your survey courses.

What year would you recommend that I start taking the courses for the minor?

Start taking them as soon as you can fit them in. There is a lot of demand for most of these courses.

Are EXED 416, 417, 418 "waiver courses"? I plan to take these as well to earn the autism certificate but realize that 27 credits is unrealistic what courses do I cut out since we only need 18 credits?

You do only need 18 credit hours to complete this minor, but if you choose to take more courses - like adding the Autism Certificate courses - those credits will count toward your 120 credits needed to graduate. We can count EXED 416 - the 1st of the ASD Certificate courses - as a Survey (required) course, so if you did not want to take both EXED 305 and EXED 320, you could choose EXED 416 instead.

I completed EXED 200 last semester and it counted towards my CSD major. After declaring the EXED NT minor, will EXED 200 only count towards my minor requirements or will it still also count towards my CSD major?

EXED 200 works for both programs, so you have met the Foundations requirement for the EXED NT minor.

What about substitution/waiver courses?

Substitution/Waiver courses are those that your program advisor agrees can count toward the minor, but will require a Course Directive/Waiver form at the time of your graduation application.

Can I take another EXED Minor course concurrently while take EXED 200, the prerequisite for all other courses in this minor?

As long as you earn a C or better and your Instructor has approved your taking another EXED course simultaneously with EXED 200.
