Is this program offered online??

No. All courses are offered face-to-face.

No. This program is for degree seeking students only.

Do I have to be a Teacher, or be in a Teacher Licensure Program to Apply to this Program?

We encourage our behavior specialist students to also pursue teacher licensure if they do not already have it. Having teacher licensure adds to your credibility as a BCBA, particularly if you want to work with students in schools. However, this is not a requirement.

Is this a Coursework Only Program, or can I get the Experience Hours I Need to Sit for the BCBA Exam?

The JMU Behavior Specialist program offers both the coursework AND the supervised experience hours students need to sit for the BCBA exam. Under the BACB 5th edition task list, prospective BCBAs are required to earn 2000 experience hours, with 5% of those hours supervised by a current BCBA. We give our students a variety of practicum placement options, or work with you and your current employer to provide supervision of those experience hours. This is one critical aspect of the JMU program that sets us apart from many other programs.

How is This Program Different From the Similar Program Offered by the Department of Psychology, JMU College of Health and Behavior Studies (CHBS)?

We are one program with faculty in both CHBS and the College of Education (CoE) working together to teach the courses. Students in either college take all the same courses. The major difference is that each college admits their own cohort each year, and the students in the two colleges end up with different degrees. The program in the CoE offers a Masters of Education (MEd) or a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) for those behavior specialists students seeking teacher licensure. The CHBS program offers a Masters of Arts in Psychological Sciences. Faculty in each college supervise students within that college.
