AUTISM SPECTRUM STUDIES


Series of courses you could take to better prepare yourself to work with individuals with Autism.


These courses are aligned with the recommendation of the National Council on Severe Autism.

This program is designed to enable current JMU students to increase their knowledge and understanding of individuals with a disability on the autism spectrum, including those with Asperger syndrome, and to engage in the practice of assessing, planning and implementing programming for this population. The content of this program is suitable for those working with this population anytime along the entire lifespan. Coursework includes:


  • Early childhood characteristics,
  • Issues and programming,
  • Initial evaluation,
  • Transition,
  • Adult needs,
  • Programming and life planning,
  • Learning,
  • Communication,
  • Behavioral issues,
  • Sensory motor components,
  • Related service needs,
  • Related and co-morbid medical conditions,
  • Social skills and support, and
  • Peer network development and support



Field experiences provide students with the opportunity to learn and practice skills in working with learners with Autism, and their families, in a variety of educational settings, across a variety of abilities, grade levels and demographics.

 

Note:  Once you enroll in EXED 416 you will be given overrides into EXED 417 & 418 as the end of the course nears.

THE GRADUATE LEVEL AUTISM CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IS NOW RECOGNIZED BY THE VIRGINIA AUTISM COUNCIL (VAC).
