Certificate in Autism Spectrum Studies

There is both a graduate and an undergraduate certificate program at JMU.  The undergraduate focuses on non-direct teacher type skills (competencies for paraprofessionals and direct service staff).

 

The undergraduate program is intended for current JMU students enrolled in non-special education licensure programs who wish to increase their understanding of this population.

UNDERGRADUATE COURSE SEQUENCE - 9 Credit Hours

EXED 416 - Overview/Assessment of Autism Disorders (3)
     Offered Fall, 1st Block

 

EXED 417 - Communication, Language/Sensory Issues in ASD (3) (pre-req: EXED 416)
     Offered Fall, 2nd Block

 

EXED 418 - PBS, FBA/BIP (pre-reqs: EXED 416 and 417)
    
Offered Spring, 1st Block


Courses must be taken in sequential order and does not include any practicum work.

 

This Add-On would be suited for those without direct responsibility or exposure to individuals with autism and those who do not hold an undergraduate degree but with a desire to increase their understanding of this population (9 credit hours of study).

 

NOTE:  these courses cannot be taken if you have taken EXED 375

The graduate level autism certificate program is now recognized by the Virginia Autism Council (VAC) and is intended for current JMU students who are going to be the teacher of record for individuals with autism. 

 

General education teachers can choose whether undergraduate or graduate courses better meets their needs and they register for this program through Outreach and Engagement.
